Aquatic Contracting (AC) was selected by Oregon Health and Science University (OHSU) for this Design-Build construction project to replace three deteriorating and undersized culverts on an existing access road over Bronson Creek with a 50-foot full-span bridge. The project was located on the OHSU West Campus located in Hillsboro, Washington County. In addition to constructing the project, AC led the team through initial site studies, project design, and an extensive permitting process to obtain permits from the Oregon Department of State Lands (DSL), US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), Clean Water Services (CWS), Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (ODFW), National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) and the City of Hillsboro. AC_s team included both civil and structural engineering subcontractors, geotechnical subcontractors, inspectors, as well as our in-house construction project managers, biologists, equipment operators, and laborers. Construction of this design-build project occurred in 2018 after all permits were obtained. The three perched (hanging) culverts were replaced with a full-span two lane modular steel bridge founded on spread footings and pipe posts with a cast in place concrete deck. Retaining walls and a storm filter were incorporated to minimize wetland and riparian impacts and improve stormwater runoff. The project removed the old fish passage barrier culverts, restoring fish passage and enhancing stream and wetland conditions on this reach of Bronson Creek. The bridge project included mass excavation, grading, spoils disposal, installation of in-water isolation and erosion control measures, temporary stream bypass, fish salvage/rescue, stream channel reconstruction, placement of large woody debris, access road improvements, and replanting and seeding with native species.
