The Shire Restoration - Aquatic Contracting

Washougal, WA

The Shire is located on 75 acres of waterfront in the Columbia River Gorge, directly across from Multnomah Falls. The historically significant site, originally landscaped by John Yeon, was gifted to the U of O and has since served as a center for Pacific Northwest landscape preservation, design and ecological studies. Despite preservation efforts and diligent maintenance by the University, storm floods in the Gorge had caused significant wave erosion to the bays at the site. AC was awarded both phase 1 (bay 1) and phase 2 (bays 2 and 3) projects for construction of the storm restoration.

The Project included site preparation, tree protection, invasive species removal, earthwork, stone and soil placement, irrigation repairs, irrigation installation, mainline directional boring, planting and seeding. Large amounts of invasive False Indigo were removed as required for remediation of the shoreline. Bay 1 repairs consisted of placement of a wave protection stone and soil matrix, with native plantings installed throughout. Bay 2 and 3 repairs included wave stone protection and the re-construction of a trail by removal of a failing cedar log retaining wall structure and replacement with a geoweb cell wall. The wall and trail were completed with minimal disturbance to the adjacent areas. Bays 2 and 3 were completed by installing native plants and seeding and a drip irrigation system for native plantings on the wall and the shoreline.

Great care was required on both phases of the project to protect existing landscaping and the delicate nature of the site. The project required a high level of planning for meeting permit requirements, with many governing agencies as project stakeholders. The project was completed on time and budget despite the often harsh Gorge weather conditions.
